Founder Highlight: Lavender Tree Co.
A Woman After Wellness
Agata Golabek is a creative person by nature. Having always had a passion for crafting her own natural products, she has used this outlet to help her unwind and destress in the evenings following long days in a construction management role. In doing so, she has seen a drastic improvement in her health and wellbeing, noticing a positive link between natural living and a reduction in her stress levels, migraines and food intolerances.
With the onset of the pandemic in 2019, Agi began searching for new sources of creativity when she stumbled on an article on candle making. Having always loved candles, she wanted to incorporate these into her daily life without compromising her lifestyle or her health.
Her journey began with the purchase of a simple candle-making kit. From there, she explored all topics related to natural plant-based fragrance oils, waxes and wicks. It wasn’t long before she was hooked, producing and perfecting formulas to achieve her vision. The sense of calmness and relaxation she sought when embarking on this project encouraged her to continue to pursue her newfound passion. A local floral designer and close friend encouraged Agi to pursue candle making as a business venture. Although nervous by the idea, she decided to push past her fears and give it her all. After receiving positive feedback from friends and family, she began selling her candles at her friend’s boutique in addition to local craft markets.
The Story Behind the Name
Lavender Tree Co. was named because of the sense of calm and wellness this plant provides. A common essential oil in Agi’s life, lavender is a staple for relaxation, yoga, house cleaning and more. Connecting the sense of grounding from this plant to her clean, sensory product line felt like a natural and fitting choice.
All of Lavender Tree Co.’s candles are handmade, including their wicks. Each is crafted with pure soy wax and certified plant-based fragrance oils. The scent formulations, down to the ratios of oils to wax, have been a result of Agi’s work and perseverance. For Agi, natural ingredients and scents have a big impact on emotions, mood, stress levels, and anxiety - something she has worked to improve over the years. She reflects on her experiences when formulating a new scent, wanting to create the same positive impact on the lives of her customers through each candle’s sensory experience. She continues to be super involved in all aspects of the brand. In addition to creating the formulations for each scent, she has designed the labels and continues to hand-pour each candle to ensure a high degree of quality.
“I would like people to know that soy candles burn 70% longer than regular paraffin and that paraffin wax is toxic. Even simple tea lights.”
Agata is passionate about sharing her knowledge on the benefits of choosing natural candles. A big focus for Agi is to use her platform to educate consumers on the health advantages soy candles provide. “Soy candles are much healthier to breathe, burn cleaner and reduce the amount of indoor air pollution. They are animal friendly and safe for the entire family.” When asked what she wanted people to know most about her brand, Agata responded: “I would like people to know that soy candles burn 70% longer than regular paraffin and that paraffin wax is toxic. Even simple tea lights.” For Agata, these were the drivers that pushed her to seek out natural alternatives and she is dedicated to sharing these details to help promote healthier living.
The Life of an Entrepreneur
Agata attributes the person she has become to her vast life experiences. Growing up in Poland and living in countries all over the world has shaped her and has helped her see life from a different perspective. When she entered into this venture, she had no prior experience in running a business. She quickly had to learn and perfect the art of candle making while also teaching herself how to order supplies, manage inventory, deal with production and customer service. She managed it all while continuing to work her full-time job. When asked what her proudest accomplishment has been so far in running her business, she said it was learning to create her website. Setting out to achieve something completely new to her provided her with a sense of confidence that anything is possible when you dedicate the right energy and time.
“I have learned more about myself, my goals and priorities in a few months as an entrepreneur than in the 31 years of my life so far, and this is just the beginning for me.”
As an entrepreneur, there are many things thrown your way on a daily basis that teach you valuable lessons. It is by trying and failing that you determine what works best for your business. As Agi states: “I have learned more about myself, my goals and priorities in a few months as an entrepreneur than in the 31 years of my life so far, and this is just the beginning for me.”
