Alison and Jessica hold three things dear; clinically tested skincare products, natural ingredients, and empowering women in STEM fields. Trailblazers in their industry, these women demonstrate that all three can be accomplished with the right amount of passion, knowledge, and expertise.

In 2015, Alison Crumblehulme was hired as Vice President of Business Development at Mirexus Biotechnologies, a company that was created to bring PhytoSpherix® to the market. As a chemist and MBA grad, Alison saw incredible potential in this powerful material, which sparked her desire to develop her own skincare line with PhytoSpherix as the primary ingredient.

Enter Jessica Kizovski, a cosmetic sciences grad and accomplished makeup artist who quickly became the missing piece to the puzzle. She had tried all of the major beauty brands’ skincare products and identified a similar opportunity in the beauty market.

When Alison and Jessica finally crossed paths in 2015 they quickly realized the potential that could come from their cumulative knowledge. Alison and Jessica’s talents and backgrounds complemented one another perfectly. With their combined expertise in chemistry and cosmetics, they were a force to be reckoned with. Harnessing the powerful potential of  PhytoSpherix®, a 100% plant-based glycogen, they bridged the gap between clean skincare and clinical results.

Jessica was blown away by Phytospherix® and amazed by its ability to energize the skin. This excitement inspired her to engineer several innovative, high-end formulations for the skin. With this, they knew they had found the ingredient that would take skincare to the next level.

Excited by the potential of what lay ahead, they began to piece together a business plan that would eventually lead to what we now know as, Veriphy Skincare.

So what is Phytoglycogen?

PhytoSpherix® is a 100% plant-based glycogen (phytoglycogen), which energizes the skin’s natural ability to produce collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid.

Why does glycogen promote skin health?

Glycogen is composed entirely of glucose (sugar) and is your body’s way of storing energy. It is found in every cell in the body but is mainly stored in the liver and muscles where it can be quickly broken down to release energy when needed. Glycogen energizes cells to keep them functioning normally and effectively and is also found in the skin where it serves a similar purpose.

When Veriphy’s products are applied, they fuel the cells to support skin health and reveal a brighter, more even skin tone.

So why Phytoglygogen?

Traditionally, glycogen has been derived from animal sources, most often marine shellfish. This has been problematic for those with shellfish allergies. The extraction process also uses harsh chemicals which can result in broken or fragmented glycogen and often leaves residual contaminants.

The term “phytoglycogen” refers to glycogen derived from plants. The PhytoSpherix® phytoglycogen from Veriphy is therefore 100% derived from plant sources. With their water extraction process, it isolates the glycogen, leaving the molecule completely intact and unmodified, for an effective, natural beauty boost. Their clinical results show that skin is left deeply hydrated with a visible reduction in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

So what does the name Veriphy mean?

The name Veriphy was chosen as it combines the French word ‘vert’, meaning green, and ‘phy’ from the Greek origin ‘from nature’. A play on words, ‘veriphy’ signifies their commitment to scientific verification of their natural products. In addition to having a clever name, Veriphy also holds the status of being an award-winning, luxury, high-performance skincare line. Their cruelty-free, vegan, and 100% Canadian-made products reflect the careful consideration they put into everything they do.

Alison and Jessica are extremely proud of Veriphy’s roots. All of the products they've developed are manufactured in Canada using sustainable practices and environmentally-friendly packaging. As the company grows, they are extremely committed to maintaining the ethos of Veriphy, which is to continue to develop products that hold innovation and sustainability as their  top priority.

Committing to Women in STEM

Veriphy is an organization led by women who are committed to promoting, advocating, and encouraging the contributions of women in ‘STEM’ - science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Women are vastly underrepresented in these areas and Veriphy is working to change these statistics.

“Women are less likely to choose a STEM program, regardless of mathematical ability. Studying math and biology, I often found myself having to defend my place in these programs. We want to shift this mindset.”

Veriphy is proud to provide social and financial support to the next generation of women in STEM by awarding an annual scholarship to a woman entering one of these fields of study at the University of Guelph, where PhytoSpherix® was discovered.

When asked what advice Alison and Jessica would give to up-and-coming female entrepreneurs they said: “Go for it! There are not enough female entrepreneurs. The most successful companies consist of varying points of view, and it is important to embrace diversity”.

When it comes to the challenges of growing a business and brand, they also stress the importance of asking for help. “It is really easy to say that you can do everything - it is your brand, after all. The problem is that you start to pull yourself into all different directions and inevitably start to burn out. Focus on your strengths, and look for a team that will fill the gaps in your knowledge”.

Jessica and Alison embody the notion that when you put your mind to something and the heart is there, anything is possible.
